Byōdōin
Byōdōin is a mythical place of Japan.
Built a thousand years ago on the banks of the Uji River, it offers a sensitive vision of the Pure Land, Amida's paradise, through its gardens and architecture. The Phoenix Hall still houses the imposing statue of Amida Buddha by sculptor Jōchō.
The marvelous underground museum offers an exquisite exhibition of the most refined sculptures of Buddhist iconography and allows you to imagine the place in its original splendor.
Manpukuji Temple
A Chinese enclave in your Kyōto journey. Manpukuji was founded 400 years ago by Chinese master Ingen.
On his arrival in Japan, the master attracted to him all the greatest scholars of the time and for good reason; he gave Japan a great gift by introducing the Ming style of calligraphy to its lands, alongside various scientific and artistic knowledge.
The Ōbaku tradition is highly syncretic. It includes the practice of zazen meditation, along the recitation of mantras dedicated to Amida Buddha, as well as the work around kōan.
Even today, Master Ingen, and the small sect he founded in Manpukuji Temple, embody a singular example of the beautiful encounter between the purest traditions of old China and the welcoming land of Japan.
